Today, I want to explain what the 401 error is, and how you can get rid of it.

In a previous video I talked about what 404 error is.

A 401 unauthorized error is an HTTP status call indicating that the server receive an unverified request.

In human therms all that this means is that the website you are trying to access won’t load until you log in with a valid username and password.

This can be caused when you try to access an incorrect URL, when using invalid credentials, by a security firewall issue or maybe just a plugin.

401 error easy fixes:

1. Check URL for errors (make sure is correct)
2. Try searching the correct URL in Google
3. Clear your browser’s cookie and cache
4. Deactivate your WordPress plugins one by one
5.1. Flush your DNS by using ipconfig/flushdns in CMD.exe (Windows)
5.2. Flush your DNS by using sudo killall-HUO mDNSResponder in Terminal (Command Promt)
6. Reload the page

Sometimes, waiting can also help you.

There are some hosting companies that may block your IP because they consider you may be doing something malicious.

If so, your site gets locked down for a period of time.

In the case that you try to access somebody else’s website and the 401 error shows up, it can just be that their website is actually under maintenance.
